I’ve owned this detector for a couple of weeks now and I’ve gone through ‘all’ the settings.When I get within 6 feet of another vehicle my BSM (Blind spot monitoring) reflects back and sets off this detector. In the City I can deal with it using City mode and the Quiet Ride feature, however on the HWY I use advance mode to reduce K’s sensitivity (70% and now I’m down to 40%). But once someone cuts in front of me it reacts to the K band of my BSM and even worse so in a long tunnel or in my garage (it goes crazy!). So it’s either I drive on HWY trips in City mode and risk getting tickets or deactivate my BSM. I’m already becoming immune to the K band alert sound because it goes off so often which may get me into trouble soon.The good is of course is the super range of the KA band. The only ‘false’ I get in KA is a signal near my Direct TV Dish at home. I took the detector off the windshield and pointed it toward the sky to see where the signal was coming from, which caused the detector to max out the KA band meter. (weird right?). So to be clear I had no KA falses in the 2 weeks of city driving nor on the 300 mile round trip hwy drive through 3 states but ‘driveway’ driving is a different story but to me irrelevant.The KA segmentation seems like a good idea for those confident in their local PD’s frequency ranges. I like the KA and K filters as well.I wish I could program more from my PC like my remote detector so I can delete muting mistakes, edit red light cameras, speed cameras and do all of my detector settings on a big screen so as not to having to squeeze my fingers where I have the detector hardwired.FYI, This isn’t my first detector I have a couple of remote detectors and an old escort I haven’t used in years. The BSM at hand is for an MB, and note I called customer service but it’s tier 1 (regurgitate what’s in the manual) only so I suppose I’m stuck with this issue until others complain and an update is provided.Update Feb 2018.I have been able to reduce reaction to my vehicles BSM detection by reducing K band AND adding alert mute up to 40 MPH. That’s fine out in the burbs but if a random police officer decides to set up radar in a city/small town where the speed is 25 mph and I’m traveling at 37 mph consider me pulled over. (it’s almost happened 3 times already).I love watching the range of KA detection (after decades of detectors focusing on K band). And I’ve had 2 POP alerts show up (never found the police radar unit though).New pet peeve is the auto shut off, it is unreliable. It uses the GPS to sense the vehicle isn’t moving. Well the earth and satellites move and there may be K alerts from motion sensor in parking garage that will keep the R3 on. Many times I get back into my vehicle and when I start it the detector has the nerve to recite, ‘Low Battery’. Note: I’ve since hardwired my R3.The R3 hardwire kit that comes with the mute button is hideous! It’s like Uniden is a brand new radar company when it’s not (regarding the hardwire kit). I have a standard hardwire kit, BTW.Also, unless I didn’t figure it out yet, when marking your own location alert it doesn’t allow me to assign the type of alert I’m creating.I’m hoping and looking forward to the next update being really good.Last Update: 7/20/18Finally got in a 900 mile round trip to Myrtle Beach.Though this dector is the ‘dumbest’ I’ve owned when it comes to features, outside of radar detection. However it still amazes me with it’s long range KA.Driving through the small/tiny towns of NC and SC to get to the beaches this detector earns its keep. 2 hidden KA speed traps were easily detected (one was a black on black charger with black rims, under a tree, in a church parking lot was one of them) and 2 hits on laser at the laser guns typical max range (typically a visual must be made at like 1000 ft or less I believe.). The laser hit was at max range, I couldn’t even see the police vehicle when I was being lidar’d so I’m sure he/she couldn’t make out what type of vehicle I was driving either.Finally thought, this is like a gun with no ‘safety’ or a pocket knife it’s a pure tool made for radar detection at max range. I drive with this daily (rush hour traffic) and if I hadn’t been driving with a detector for the past 25yrs (first detector was a uniden) I wouldn’t be able to stand the constant muting of beeps and chirps. My last detector was a Passport remote detector which was quiet as a mouse until BSM became a standard feature on vehicles. I had high hopes that this device would reject BSM’s more effectively without having to reduce K band detection. Note: K band radar seems to be nearly non existent on the interstate i95/85 corridor so soon K band may be able to be ignored completely like X band.Until other smarter detectors increase their KA range your best bet is this one. Not to mention free updates with this device vs Passport/Escort nickling and dimming you for updates and features.
